European Peat and Growing Media Association

The Association

The European Peat and Growing Media Association represents peat and growing media companies and associations at EU level.

EPAGMA is committed to the highest environmental practices in peat extraction, to the responsible use of peat as a local energy source, and promoting the importance of growing media for horticultural plant production in Europe. The Association operates on the basis of a sector group structure:

  • The ‘Growing Media’ Sector Group provides information and technical expertise on the use of growing media products in Europe;
  • The ‘Energy from Peatland’ Sector Group’s promotes the role of energy peat as a critical indigenous energy source in Europe.

Both groups include experts from EPAGMA members and coordinate common positions, disseminate scientific information, provide technical information and assess regulatory developments in relation to their sector. The groups prepare recommendations for next steps for consideration by EPAGMA’s Executive Board.

The Industry

The peat and growing media industry represents a sector of 1.3 billion euro turnover, accounting for 11.000 jobs across the EU. Most of the horticultural peat producers in the EU are small to medium-sized companies, but with a strong impact in rural areas in which peat reserves are located. EPAGMA currently has 17 member companies and 9 associate members based in 14 European countries and has operations in all 28 Member States of the European Union.
